Handwriting Analysis or Graphology?

Many people are unaware that Graphology and Handwriting Analysis are one and the same thing.   Graphology to-day is the accumulation of knowledge of understanding how and why handwriting portrays the unique character of the individual human being.    The first attributable source for assessing a persons handwriting to understand their character is Socrates.  My favourite and now rather hackneyed phrase when introducing an audience to Graphology is:-   ‘Socrates spoke about it, Aristotle wrote about it’.  Since that time it has been researched and developed and we are still learning more about the intricacies of handwriting and how to analyse character from samples which come across our desks.

For the past twenty-five years I have studied and worked as a Consultant Graphologist and as a Founding Member of the British Institute of Graphologists I have served as the Institute as their PR-Marketing Officer and now help set and mark the Institute’s examination papers.  

Over the years I have worked for many national and international organizations when they have been recruiting staff and also as a Document Examiner.    To give you some ideas of who uses graphology and why, together with how it is done I have put together the following :-

Document Examination is requested  for many reasons  the four most obvious being:

Fraud:   a forged cheque, legal agreement, will.

Obscene graffiti or notes within a workplace or other community.

Anonymous letters.

Genealogical research – using the handwriting of deceased family members for biographical reasons. (i.e. discovering their personality and raison d‘etre for living).   This entails a combination of the skills required for Personality Profiling and Document Examination.

All these commonly involve handwriting comparison, examination and identification in both a legal and personal context, and involves the analysis of disputed documentation and signature examination to groups together similarities and dissimilarities.      It also necessitates the construction of the writing, size and shape.     All these  play an important role in the final Opinion/Conclusion made.    However, analysis  in this area is not an exact science.   We have to base our conclusions on facts that are measured in significance and which eventually lead to our final Opinion.   

In both civil and criminal cases it is our duty to provide written reports providing evidence to help the Courts come to a fair and just conclusion.      Our obligation to the Court must always override the expectations of our Client .    Quite often two expert witnesses will not agree their Opinions – and it is then that the lawyers and Court  are required to make their own assessment of the Opinions before them and  draw their own conclusion.

Personality Profiling is often requested by members of the general public seeking to know themselves better and  therefore choose the career that is right for them.    The profile will consist of the three main areas that form a persons character and influence their behavior.    These are:

Personality Structure :   The graphologist can trace back, through the handwriting, the events that greatly influenced their understanding; behavior and emotions and therefore eventually made them the people they are today.    It will highlight their ability to socialize, their stability and the way they ultimately have chosen to live their lives and how the affects both them and the people around them.

Intellect:    The intellectual abilities or qualities are most apparent in handwriting – it indicates most accurately their mentally agility, ability to concentrate and think matters through, how they communicate and whether they are both visually and mentally aware of all that is going on around them.

Working Qualities:   Ambition, commitment and integrity are all very visible in the writing – together with a strong indication as to how well they work within a team, or whether they prefer to ‘go it alone’. 

Personnel Selection:

A Personality Profile as above is the starting point when assessing the suitability of a candidate for a position within an organization.   It is then broken down into a detailed assessment of specific traits and abilities against the job specification of the company.    It is essential that the employer briefs the graphologist as to the main components of the position and also, if at all possible, for the graphologist to meet with the Company to gain their own perspective of the ambience and nature of the organization and the people within it.
